Maya’s "Poop Miracle Polenta" (Gentle Digestive Kitchen Topper)

A simple, nourishing stovetop blend created in our own kitchen to support calm digestion. Inspired by our daily routine with Maya and Bestie during bouts of tummy troubles—and now they are proud "Poop Stars!" Formulated with clean, familiar pantry ingredients: plain pumpkin purée, warm water, and cold-milled seed and fiber flours from Yez! Artisan Baking Mix.

The name is playful, but the intention is grounded: simple whole ingredients, careful preparation, and tuning in to what supports the individual dog in front of you.

Recipe Overview

  • Prep Time: 5 minutes
  • Cook Time: 3–5 minutes
  • Cooling Time: 20–30 minutes (must cool completely before serving)
  • Yield: Approx. 3 cups of gentle digestive polenta topper
  • Texture Profile: Thick, creamy, spoonable porridge
  • Equipment: Medium saucepan, wire whisk, silicone spatula, glass storage container

Ingredients

The Foundation

  • Filtered Water: 2 cups (16 oz / 475 ml)
  • Yez! Artisan Baking Mix: 4 oz (approx. 115 g)
  • Plain 100% Pumpkin Purée: 7.5 oz (approx. 210 g / 1/2 of a standard 15 oz can)

Optional Digestive Boosters

  • Ground Ginger Root: 1/4 tsp (for soothing warmth)
  • Virgin Coconut Oil: 1 tsp (for healthy medium-chain fats and palatability)

Instructions

1. Boil the Water

In a medium saucepan, bring the 2 cups of filtered water to a rolling boil over medium-high heat.

2. Whisk & Hydrate the Mix

Gradually pour in the 4 oz Yez! Artisan Baking Mix while whisking continuously to prevent clumping. Immediately reduce the heat to low. Continue stirring with a spatula for 2 to 3 minutes as the cold-milled seeds and plant fibers absorb the hot water. The mixture will rapidly thicken into a rich, porridge-like consistency and pull cleanly away from the bottom and sides of the pan.

3. Fold in the Pumpkin & Boosters

Remove the pan from the heat. Fold in the 7.5 oz plain pumpkin purée, stirring until completely smooth, uniform, and golden-orange. If using, fold in the optional 1/4 tsp ground ginger and 1 tsp virgin coconut oil until fully melted and integrated.

4. Cool Completely (Crucial Step)

Transfer the polenta to a shallow glass dish and let it cool completely to room temperature. Never serve warm, as a dog’s digestive tract is sensitive to heat, and cooling allows the fiber matrix to finish setting into a firm, spoonable mash.

How to Serve

  • As a Meal Topper: Spoon 1 to 3 tablespoons (calibrated to your dog’s weight and caloric needs) directly over their regular fresh or raw meals.
  • As a Lick Mat / Kong Enrichment: Spread into silicone enrichment mats or freeze inside durable rubber toys for a calming, gut-friendly activity.

Crucial Canine Safety & Master Notes

100% Pure Pumpkin Only

Always verify the ingredient label: the only ingredient should be pure pumpkin. Never use canned pumpkin pie mix, which contains added sugars, dairy, nutmeg, and potential artificial sweeteners like xylitol (birch bark extract), which is highly toxic to dogs.

Introduce Gradually

Every canine digestive system is unique. When introducing any new functional fiber topper, start with small amounts (1 teaspoon for small dogs; 1 tablespoon for larger dogs) and monitor stool consistency before increasing. This recipe is designed as an occasional functional treat or meal topper, not a complete and balanced daily diet.

Veterinary Guidance

This recipe reflects our personal kitchen experience with our own dogs. It is not veterinary advice and is not intended to diagnose, treat, mitigate, cure, or prevent any health condition or disease. Always consult your veterinarian before making significant dietary changes, especially if your dog has existing medical conditions, takes prescribed medication, or experiences persistent digestive upset, lethargy, or dehydration.

Storage & Freshness

  • Refrigeration: Store in an airtight glass container in the refrigerator for up to 5 to 7 days.
  • Freezer Paws: Portion into silicone ice cube or paw molds and freeze for up to 3 months for ready-to-use, single-serve digestive cubes.
